Jousting Battle At Bolsover Castle
The sun beat down on Bolsover Castle, but there was nothing gentle about the mood. This wasn’t a quiet bank holiday stroll through history. This was war on horseback.
Steel rang out as four hardened knights rode into the arena, armour scarred and shining, visors down, eyes fixed on victory. The Wyvern. The Wildman. Sir Lancelot. Jason of the Argonauts. No introductions needed. You could feel it in your chest before the first charge even began.
When the horns sounded, everything exploded into motion. Horses thundered across the ground at full gallop, earth shaking beneath their hooves as lances were driven forward with brutal intent. The impact was violent. Wood shattered. Armour screamed. Crowds roared. In seconds, glory was won or stripped away.
Oscar didn’t blink. He stood frozen, wide-eyed, completely locked in as these iron men collided again and again. There was no mistaking it — this was real power, real danger, real bravery. By the time the dust settled, he was already plotting his own future battles, demanding a sword and shield so he could fight alongside his heroes.
Let Battle Commence
This was no polite pageant. This was controlled chaos.
Lances smashed into breastplates with bone-jarring force, splintering into flying shards as knights reeled in their saddles. The smell of sweat and leather hung in the air. The ground trembled. The crowd surged with every hit, every near fall, every moment where a rider clung on by sheer will alone.
In medieval times, tournaments weren’t entertainment — they were survival. Reputation, honour and life itself rode on moments like these. Watching it unfold at Bolsover, nothing felt distant or romantic. It felt raw. It felt dangerous. And it was impossible to look away.
We threw our support behind Sir Lancelot. History says he was the greatest of King Arthur’s knights, and standing there, watching him charge headlong into battle, it was easy to believe the legend.
The Living History Encampment
Away from the arena, the grit continued. The living history encampment stripped away the fantasy and showed the hard truth of medieval life. This was a world of fire, iron and survival. Tools were heavy. Clothing was rough. Life was short and unforgiving.
Reenactors spoke of daily struggles, of training, fighting and enduring, giving a brutally honest glimpse into what it really meant to live in the 15th century. This wasn’t storybook history — this was life lived on the edge.
It’s Play Time
For the younger warriors, there was still battle to be had.
Oscar leapt straight into his own training ground, testing his courage on the battle playground, sword in hand, imagination running wild. One minute he was watching legends clash in steel, the next he was one of them — a knight in the making, fighting invisible enemies and chasing glory.
Bolsover Castle didn’t just show us history that day. It made us feel it.
