We took Oscar to Robin Hood’s Wheelgate Park in Newark, Nottinghamshire, and he had a blast from the moment we walked in. Wheelgate Park has plenty going on — rides, play zones, animals and indoor areas — basically everything you need to keep a kid busy for a few hours. We only had about two hours before the rain rolled in, but Oscar didn’t waste a second.
He tore through the Major Oak Adventure Playground, climbed everything he could, and then dragged us over to the Victorian Carousel. If the weather had held out, he’d have kept going for hours without slowing down.
Even with the early cut-off, it turned out to be a solid trip. We’ll be heading back on a better day to get the full experience.
Exploring More of Wheelgate Park
As we moved around the park, we found the Animal Adventure Zone, which quickly grabbed Oscar’s attention. He got right up close to the animals — especially the reptiles. The California king snake stopped him in his tracks. He stood there watching it like he was trying to figure out how it worked. Wheelgate Park is good for that: always something new for kids to lock onto.
After that, we hit the indoor areas once the rain kicked in. The soft play zones gave us some cover, and Oscar launched straight into the slides and climbing frames like he’d stored up extra energy. These indoor sections make Wheelgate Park a reliable spot in Nottinghamshire, rain or shine.
Once the rain eased off, we headed back outside. Oscar spotted the sandpit and sprinted for it instantly. He could’ve stayed there for hours digging, building and getting absolutely covered — typical.
A Place We’ll Definitely Return To
By the time we wrapped up, Oscar was completely worn out — which is exactly what you want after a day out. Even though the weather cut things short, we still packed in plenty. Wheelgate Park is easily one of the better family days out in Nottinghamshire, with a mix of rides, animals, adventure areas and indoor zones that actually keep kids busy.
Next time, we’ll go for a full day and hopefully catch some decent weather. There’s still a lot left to see, and Oscar will definitely be tearing around that Major Oak playground again.
